Atkins Pickle Fest 2014
I live in a small town in Arkansas (Atkins). When I say small I am talking a town with a population just a little of 3,000. The town is known to be the pickle capital of Arkansas. There used to be a pickle factory here but that has now turned into a chicken plant. Not only that but the main reason for Pickle Fest is the celebration of the Fried Pickle. From what I have read and seen the fried pickle was invented and sold here in a drive in called duchess drive-in during the summer of 1963. They were created by a man named Bernell "fatman" Austin. He was the owner of the diner. You can not buy this recipe in any restaurant. This is the only time of the year and place you can get the original fried pickle. In celebration of the famous Fried pickle this weekend is the kick off the 23rd annual pickle fest in downtown Atkins.
The family decided to see what all the hype was about. Logan had a blast! He loves this type of environment. People everywhere, lots of vendors and booths set up and people even had their dogs. I seen some pretty adorable furbabies!

Logan rode his first pony! I was so amazed he loved it. He will not even pet our dogs but he loved this horse. It was well worth the $5 to see the smile on his face.
Logan and I both got to try our first ever fried pickle.
All in all it was a nice evening out with the boys!
It looks a great day for you and your adorable family. Fried pickles is a favorite of my hubs but we haven't got them around here. I do remember going through one state on a journey across country, going to a diner for lunch and it was on the menu. They were real good! Great photos!
ReplyDeleteThank you! I have seen them on menus everywhere. I have just never tried any myself. It was okay but not something I would eat everyday.
DeleteLogan is a doll!!!
ReplyDeleteI've heard of fried pickles here in Texas, but have never tried them.
Thank you! He is a cutie!!
DeleteI've been to a cabbage fest but never a pickle fest! I do like the sound (and the look!) of the fried pickles :)
ReplyDeleteThey were decent. I would be interested in the cabbage fest too. In my home town which is not to far from here there is a peach festival every summer.
DeleteI just read a facebook post about festivals in Arkansas and this one was listed. I am a huge fried pickle fan, but have never had a homemade one- I get mine at Sonic!
ReplyDeleteI never knew sonic had the. I wonder if the ones here do. I will have to look at the menu next time!
DeleteIt really looks so fun, and your kid is very happy. I wish to ride a small pony like that too, haha! I can't imagine that pickles can be a big cultural tradition for a place, and even fried. I am excited to know how it tasted.
ReplyDeleteThe pickle was okay. Not something I would want all the time. The ranch dressing made it taste a bit better.
DeleteIt looks like such good fun! I remember riding a pony as a child..can't wait to find somewhere for my two to do the same..such fun x
ReplyDeleteI got to ride a horse about a year ago. I enjoy it. Thank you for stopping by and hope you enjoy your week ahead
