Trumpet Vine

So the last couple of days I have been seeing blooms laying around on the ground and looked and looked and could not find where they were coming from.

I posted a picture on facebook and got a lot of responses on what they could be. Anything from trumpet lily to day lilies. Everyone wanted to think it was a lily. I had one person say a "hummingbird flower" So I looked that up and seen it said a trumpet vine. I kept reading and it said it did not bloom until June. Here it is and its only April. So I passed it off because of that and I never could find a vine. Anywhere!! I walk out this morning and see these blooms basically covering the ground. I look even harder and I found where they were coming from.

Yes this is indeed the "hummingbird flower" or trumpet vine. This is the only living thing on this tree. It was the last place I would have thought to look. It does not start low to the ground. Which is weird but it doesn't.
Supposedly this attracts hummingbirds. I have not seen any flying around it today. All I have seen are bees. If this plant is not supposed to bloom until June does this mean we are going to have a bad summer? Ugh I hate the heat. I hope this is not a sign of what is to come.

A tidbit of information on this vine. It will cause a reaction to people if the leaves are touched, something similar to poison ivy.

I suggest if your allergic to poison ivy, do not touch this plan.

  2. Beautiful trumpet vine! You have your hands full with your child, but I've met several adults who were autistic in their childhood - take heart, they can learn a lot (to be social) :)

  7. Well, how very interesting! What I love most about this post is your curiosity and your persistence in looking for the source of that bloom. I'm not sure where you are located. Will try to get back her to investigate your blog a little more closely.
