Humming Birds, Who Can Resist?

Lately I have been reading about hummingbirds and their likes. I have bought stuff from the store, you know the pre-made stuff but still yet my hummingbirds do not frequent my feeders. My parents on the other hand have so many flying about they can not keep up. I had to ask my mom what she does.

1 part sugar
2 parts water
and a touch of red food coloring (I have read on another site that food coloring does not matter, thats bull. My hummingbirds did not go to their clear food)

Okay this is an update to the above recipe. Seems since posting this I have caught some flack on adding red food coloring. There are NO proven studies that say this is harmful, so I am not hurting my hummers. Yes maybe my sugar to water ratio is a bit much but they do not eat from the feeders unless its this sweet. Next time I will try 1 to 3. But once again this does not harm my hummers. They use this as a source of energy, it is not a dietary supplement or their whole meals. Hummingbirds have a very very high metabolism so this ratio would not harm them anyway. Want to know where I get my sources? Here are the links

Those are just some, for every post that says its harmful can be met with another one that says there is no scientific proof.

You should clean your feeders regularly. Like for example if the sugar water sits to long it will sour. My parents do not even get a chance to do this. The birds suck this stuff down so quickly she has to fill them almost every single day.

At my place I have 2 hummingbirds. 2 that frequently visit my feeder. Filling them up is not necessary. One thing though, if their feeders are empty or not there, they do come searching for me. I had one actually come flying to my window and was peeking in for awhile. Then another time I walked out my door and one about pinged me as soon as I walked out.
Another rule on keeping your hummingbirds happy is keep their feeders and food out there all the time. If not they will hunt you down!

Birds and Bubbles

I am still waiting for birds to come to my feeders. I have seen ONE hummingbird. *sigh* What do I need to do to get these little guys to come around?

In the meantime it was a pretty quiet week. The husband working on his bike to get it ready for riding, kids trying to stay out of trouble and just evenings at the park.  When you have four kids and on a tight budget you really can not take the kids out and do extravagant things. That is okay for them. They enjoy the small things.
Last night we were all sitting outside and I thought I would get some bubble pictures with Logan. I have seen these and have just thought they were the cutest photos! Here are my first tries ever getting bubble shots with the baby.

I have taken a lot more but have not gotten around to editing them all yet. This is was just two of my most favorite that I wanted to share.
I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend! Do not forget your Dad's tomorrow.

Bird Frenzy

So I went to Clarksville to pick up my oldest daughter for the summer and afterwards I decided to visit my mother. She lives 2 hours away from me so I try to get there as often as I can. We sat outside most of the visit and of course I brought along my camera and the birds were going nuts. Especially the little hummingbirds. There was one certain ruby red throated one that would run all the others off if they even came close the feeders. I did my best at capturing some pictures but unfortunately the lighting was not very well.

Not my best job ever but hey.

Not only was there these fussy little hummingbirds but there were some beautiful Yellow Finches. Feel free to tell me exactly what these birds are called.

On the way home we seen the most beautiful sunset that I have seen in a very long long time

The further we went the pinker the sky was.

When we got home my oldest caught a lizard. Then she was outside looking for some crickets under wood to feed this thing and this is what she ran across

I'm hoping to see some baby lizards in a couple months, maybe if they make it.

Hope everyone has a great weekend and please feel free to join in the weekend blog hops.
